Challenges opponents to sign ‘Republican Peace Agreement’

(Denver, CO) – Today, Republican gubernatorial candidate and former US Congressman Tom Tancredo announced his challenge to all current and future Republican primary candidates for Governor to join him in signing his ‘Republican Peace Agreement.’

Tancredo explained that a main reason for Republican statewide losses over the past several cycles is due to negative and often vicious primary election races that leave the winner too damaged to go on and defeat the Democrat in the general election.

As examples, Tancredo pointed to former Republican Congressman Bob Beauprez’s losing campaign for Governor in 2006 and Republican Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck’s losing campaign for US Senate in 2010.

In both campaigns, their defeated Republican Primary opponents irreparably damaged the eventual Republican nominee by, among other negative actions, falsely labeling Beauprez as"Both ways Bob” and shamefully charging Ken Buck with conducting a"War on Women.” Despite surviving their primary elections, these labels stuck like glue and Democrats simply carried the same themes forward to win their general elections.

"I’m running for governor of Colorado to defeat John Hickenlooper and his radical, left wing policies, not run down other decent Republican candidates. If our struggling Republican Party can’t get it together and demonstrate civility toward each other, we will again be handing victory to the Democrat extremists and their out-of-control, disastrous agenda,” stated Tancredo.

Tancredo’s ‘Republican Peace Agreement’, emailed to his declared Republican opponents today, requests candidates to pledge in writing to join him in:

• Speaking no ill of fellow law-abiding Republican candidates and instead direct their criticism at exposing failed Democrat Governor John Hickenlooper.
• Refraining from divisive debates except if Gov. Hickenlooper attends.
• Running their campaigns to demonstrate genuine leadership in reforming Colorado’s broken government and making the case why they will have the best chance at defeating Gov. Hickenlooper in November of 2014.

Tancredo concluded by saying,"I support strong and vibrant primary elections, but reject tearing down my decent Republican brethren who uphold the law. If any such Republican, be it me or someone else, will have any chance at winning in 2014, we must join together today and pledge peace with each other while directing our fair criticism where it belongs - solely at our failed Governor John Hickenlooper.”
